The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday recognized that former presidents have immunity from prosecution for certain actions taken during their term in office, as it threw out a judicial decision rejecting Donald Trump's bid to shield himself from federal criminal charges involving his efforts to overturn his election loss in 2020.

A ruling on Monday said former presidents are entitled to "absolute immunity" from prosecution for actions within their constitutional authority, but are not entitled to immunity from prosecution for actions taken in a private capacity.
