China is an important source of direct investment for Brazil, covering many fields such as manufacturing, energy, mining, agriculture and infrastructure. Brazil's decision to establish a consulate in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province, is a milestone. The choice of Chengdu underscores its growing importance in bilateral relations. Sichuan Province, as a very important inland province in southwest China, has a long history of cooperation with Brazil in science, trade, culture, etc.
Brazilian Ambassador Marcos Galvao says, "It was a strategic decision. It was the object of consideration. There were other possible cities in which we could have opened this consulate general. But the strength of the province, the strength of Chengdu, as a metropolis, as a city, as a center for the creation of science and technology knowledge." The newly established consulate general in Chengdu will provide consular services to Chinese people who want to visit Brazil or who have business with Brazil and to assist Brazilians who live in its jurisdiction.
Brazil has become Sichuan's largest trading partner and an essential partner in Latin America for scientific and cultural cooperation. Over the past five years, the average growth rate for annual trade between the two sides has remained above 15 percent. In 2023, Brazil's lithium ore, wood pulp and soybean exports to Sichuan all achieved double-digit growth. During Brazilian Ambassador Marcos Galvao's visit to Southwest China's Sichuan Province, CGTN's Liu Yang spoke to him about the establishment of Brazil's consulate general in Chengdu, trade and diplomatic ties between China and Brazil, and his thoughts on the huge Chinese market.
