Wang Xinyu of China defeated Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-0 in a women's singles first-round match at the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Tuesday.

Having advanced to the second round at the grass court Grand Slam tournament for the second straight time, Wang Xinyu will play the No. 5 seed, Jessica Pegula of the USA, next.

Wang's compatriot Bai Zhuoxuan lost to Harriet Dart of Great Britain 6-4, 6-0 on Tuesday. After the first-round competitions over the previous two days, a total of five players from the Chinese mainland advanced to the second round: Wang Xinyu, Wang Yafan and Zhu Lin in the women's event, and Zhang Zhizhen and Shang Juncheng in the men's event.

The defending women's singles champion, Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic, was upset by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday. This was just the second time for the reigning women's singles titleholder to be eliminated in the first round. The last reigning champion to suffer such a loss was Steffi Graf in 1994.

The women's singles top seed, Iga Swiatek of Poland, beat Sofia Kenin of the USA 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday. Her next opponent will be Petra Martic of Croatia.

"It was a solid start and not an easy draw and I am glad to have the chance to play here again," Swiatek said. "You can't get slowly into a Grand Slam, you have to be ready straight away. On this surface it's not about the result, but about the progress and see if I can do better than last year."
