On Thursday, the heads of the member nations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) urged the building of a multipolar world in order to address urgent security threats and challenges.

They said in a statement that current security risks and challenges are global in nature, and can only be resolved through the building of a multipolar world, the improvement of global economic governance, and coordinated efforts to tackle both conventional and non-conventional security threats.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the recognized norms of international law, supporting the maintenance of world peace and security, and developing good-neighborly and friendly relations.

All member states of the SCO, regardless of their political, economic and social systems, population size, geographical location and level of economic development, enjoy equal rights in making and taking decisions within the organization, according to the statement.

The leaders pledged to peacefully resolve any differences that may arise between member states, and they said bilateral disputes would not be addressed within the SCO framework.

They also reaffirmed their adherence to the principles of non-alignment, not targeting other countries or regions, and inclusiveness.

Member states will strengthen institutional consultations on international and regional issues, take coordinated actions, and provide mutual support and close cooperation on major international and regional affairs, the statement said.
