Eleventh-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas lost to Emil Ruusuvuori 6-7 (8), 6(10)-7(12), 6-3, 3-6 in the men's singles second-round match at the at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday.
Tsitsipas was a two-time Grand Slam finalist at the French Open in 2021 and the Australian Open in 2023. He reached the Round of 16 at Wimbledon last year. By contrast, Ruusuvuori has never gone further than the second round at any Grand Slam tournament until this year's Wimbledon. His next opponent will be Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France.
Hubert Hurkacz lost against Arthur Fils after landing badly in the fourth set. He lost the first two sets 6(2)-7, 4-6, took the third one 6-2. The fourth set went to a tiebreak again. Hurkacz was down 8-9 before he had to join No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia and No. 8 seed Casper Ruud of Norway in making an early exit.
Fils, 20, became the youngest French player to advance to the third round at Wimbledon since 2005. He will play Roman Safiullin next.
Novak Djokovic went through four sets in three hours to defeat home Jacob Fearnley 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Despite a wild-card entry who was still playing college tennis at Texas Christian University recently, Fearnley made the 24-time Grand Slam “work” to secure Thursday's victory.
"He served very well. It was very difficult to break his serve. He made me work, definitely," Djokovic said. "Sometimes you have rough days where maybe you are not feeling your best. And of course it also depends on the opponent across the net. He made me earn this victory."
Djokovic will play Alexei Popyrin in the third round.
China's Shang Juncheng to Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 7-6(4), 4-6, 2-6, 4-6.
