The man who attacked former South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Friday on charges of attempted murder and election law violations, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Lee Jae-myung, then chief of South Korean main opposition Democratic Party, was attacked by a man with a knife during a visit to the country's southeastern port city of Busan on January 2.
The 67-year-old attacker, surnamed Kim, approached Lee asking for an autograph and stabbed him in the neck. Kim said he wanted to prevent Lee from becoming president.
Lee was hospitalized for over a week with his neck wound before being discharged.
