Community canteens in Taiyuan, capital of north China's Shanxi Province, have become increasingly popular among residents for their variety of food that costs less than restaurant meals, about 10 to 20 yuan per meal. Before 2021, they only served elderly residents and were in a poor state of operation due to limited customers. Local officials say the canteens' business has now been growing with total turnover reaching 220 million yuan, or $30 million, this year.
