Shanghai issued the first batch of recognition plates for completely unmanned vehicles at the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, according to the Shanghai Pudong New Area official Weibo account.

Four certified enterprises are cleared to test unmanned delivery, retailing, sanitation and other services in approved road sections. Citizens can make reservations to take these driverless cars through the corresponding apps.

Currently, all unmanned vehicles in the demonstration application stage in Shanghai are available for free rides.

After one vehicle covers at least 5,000 kilometers and has the safety and reliability of operation systems and passenger transport verified, the relevant departments will conduct a final evaluation of these enterprises and vehicles.

If approved through the evaluation, these enterprises will be able to begin commercial operation of the autonomous vehicles within designated areas.
