Uruguay defeated Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout, following a goalless draw during regular time in the Copa America 2024 quarterfinals in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, to advance to the tournament's semifinals.

Uruguay kept Brazil from posing much of a serious offensive threat against their goal during the 90 minutes of regular time via tough, physical defense. Of course, it came with the cost of a red card shown to Nahitan Nandez in the 73rd minute.

But even with only 10 men on the field, the team managed to safeguard their goal until the shootout.

Fede Valverde of Uruguay was the first to take his shot and he blew the ball into the bottom-left corner even though goalkeeper Alisson moved in the right direction.

Eder Militao was the first up for Brazil. He shot with force, but not good height, and the effort was rejected by Sergio Rochet, giving Uruguay a 1-0 lead.

Uruguay's second attempt came from Rodrigo Bentancur. Alisson correctly guessed the direction again, but couldn't stop the opposing side's lead from growing to two.

Andreas Pereira and Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored their shots for Brazil and Uruguay, respectively, taking the score to 3-1 with Uruguay leading. Douglas Luiz was the third shooter for Brazil, but he hit the post, leaving the opponents one kick away from advancing to the semifinals.

Alisson saved the shot by Jose Maria Gimenez and Brazil's Gabriel Martinelli made his kick to keep the nine-time Copa America champions alive, but only for another round because Manuel Ugarte tricked the goalkeeper into moving in the wrong direction, before drilling his kick to seal the victory for Uruguay.
