Peru is one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic ties and a comprehensive strategic partnership with China, and is the first Latin American country to sign a package of free trade agreements with China. The country is a major destination for Chinese investment under the Belt and Road Initiative, with the flagship Chancay port under construction near Lima to serve as a major trade hub connecting Latin America and Asia known as "Chancay to Shanghai." In this edition of Leaders Talk, CMG's Zou Yun sat down in Beijing with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte during her week-long state visit to China in late June. Boluarte heaps praise on China's hi-tech, new energy vehicles and high-speed railway system, and hails "Chancay to Shanghai" as a new nexus for friendly economic and trade bilateral exchanges, saying it will "not only transform Peru but also the Americas." Boluarte looks forward to seeing Chinese President Xi Jinping at this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting to be hosted by Peru, describing him as a great and charismatic leader. "I believe he has dedicated himself passionately to China's development," she notes, adding that President Xi's leadership and initiatives are crucial to global peace.
