At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo will pay a state visit to China from July 9 to 13, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying announced in a statement on Monday.

During the visit, Xi will host a welcome ceremony and a banquet for Embalo, and the two heads of state will hold talks, Lin Jian, another spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told media at a press briefing on Monday.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang will also meet with Embalo, Lin said.

He said China's friendship with the West African country was cultivated by the older generation of leaders of both sides. In the 1970s, the Chinese people firmly supported the people in Guinea-Bissau in pursuing national independence and liberation, he added.

Lin said that in recent years, China and Guinea-Bissau have firmly supported each other on issues concerning each other's core interests, cooperated in economic and social development, maintained communication and coordination in international affairs and continuously scored new achievements in friendly relations.

He said the visit is expected to inject strong impetus into deepening relations between China and Guinea-Bissau and promote friendly bilateral cooperation.
