Gregg Berhalter, head coach of the USA, has been fired, the U.S. Soccer Federation confirmed on Wednesday.

As the host team for the ongoing Copa America, the USA lost two of their three games in Group C to Panama and Uruguay, and failed to advance to the knockout phase for the first time in their five appearances in the tournament.

Matt Crocker, the U.S. Soccer sporting director, made decision to sack Berhalter after a 10-day review. He consulted president Cindy Parlow Cone, CEO J.T. Batson, vice president of sporting Oguchi Onyewu and members of the board of directors.

"I want to thank Gregg for his hard work and dedication to U.S. Soccer and our Men's National Team," Cone said in a statement. "We are now focused on working with our Sporting Director Matt Crocker and leveraging his experience at the highest levels of the sport to ensure we find the right person to lead the USMNT into a new era of on-field success."

"The Copa America result is extremely disappointing and I take full responsibility for our performance," Berhalter said in his own statement. "Our approach and process was always focused on the 2026 World Cup and I remain confident that this group will be one of the great stories in 2026."

Berhalter coached the USA in two spells between December 2018 and July 2024, separated by a gap of about eight months from December 2022 to August 2023. The team won 44 of their 74 games under him with 13 and 17 losses. They made the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 but were eliminated by the Netherlands.

The U.S. will co-host the World Cup with Canada and Mexico in 2026.
