Pakistan monitoring rainfall, flood situation amid vigorous monsoon activity prediction

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Thursday that it is closely monitoring the rainfall and flood situation as vigorous monsoon activity is predicted in the coming days across the South Asian country.

The PMD is assessing the weather situation promptly through its over 100 observatories throughout the country to keep all the stakeholders aware of any unusual weather and the need to take precautions, PDM Director General Mahr Sahibzad Khan told media.

Separate advisories for tourists and farmers are being issued to keep them well-informed about the weather, he said, adding that lightning detectors, provided by China, are also being utilized to gather data about lightning from across the country.

Khan said that the country has received 8 percent above normal rainfall as of now during the ongoing monsoon season which will last till mid-September, and the monsoon activity is likely to increase in the coming days in upper and central parts of the country.

From July to September, above-normal rainfall is expected in most parts of the country, with maximum departure over eastern Punjab and southern Sindh provinces, he added.
