From 1992 in Barcelona, Spain, to 2021 in Tokyo, Japan, USA dominated the men's basketball at the Olympics by winning seven of the eight gold medals. The only exception was at the hands of Argentina, who beat them in the semifinals in 2004 in Athens, Greece, before winning the title in the end.
Luis Scola was a member of that Argentine team. He has participated in a total of five editions of Olympic Games between 2004 and 2021.
"All five of them were the highlights of my career," Scola said. "So I'm very, very excited that I had the chance to be in the Olympics so many times and do the things we did."
Despite the glorious success Scola and Argentina have achieved in basketball, he believes that the Olympics go beyond basketball and even all sports.
"The Olympics are probably the best experience in sports," Scola said. "I think the Olympics go beyond basketball, definitely go beyond basketball. But also, I believe they go beyond sports in general, I think it is a social cultural event that is way beyond basketball and sports."
When the 2024 Olympic Games begin in Paris on July 26, Scola won't be participating in it as an athlete, but that won't stop him from enjoying it as a spectator. In fact, he found the 3x3 basketball, which was included in the Olympics for the first time in Tokyo 2020, fun to watch. He also enjoys watching football.
"I think it's a different game. It's fun. I like it a lot. I'm very happy that they play 3x3 in the Olympics," Scola said. "I think it's a fun way to play basketball, so I'm all for it."
"I watch some soccer in the Olympics, but most of the time I watch other sports." Scola added. "It's just like soccer is played all year round. But I think the Olympics, one of the good things about the Olympics is the fact that you get in contact with a whole bunch of sports, but during the year they're harder to follow. So I usually in the Olympics provide that opportunity and watch other sports. I think it was a great experience."
