Shi Xiuying, a survivor of the Nanjing Massacre, passed away on Friday at the age of 98, according to the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders on Saturday. Her passing means that there are now only 33 living registered survivors.

The Nanjing Massacre, a horrific event during World War II, began on December 13, 1937, when Japanese forces captured Nanjing, then the Chinese capital. Over six weeks, these troops killed around 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers.

Shi has recounted her traumatic experiences during the massacre. She shared poignant memories of her mother, who frantically searched through piles of bodies, hoping to find Shi's father and elder brother, both taken by the Japanese invaders.

"My mother used a bamboo stick to sort through dead bodies scattered everywhere – the ones floating above water and those lying on the streets – like she'd lost her mind," Shi had remembered. "Not a day had passed without her searching, crying and grieving."

Shi was actively involved in giving testimony. In 2015, she traveled to Japan to participate in a witness assembly, where she shared her harrowing experiences with local residents and advocated for peace.
