Taihang Mountain miracle: Connecting remote village with world beyond

Wang Mang Ridge is the highest peak of the southern Taihang Mountain range in Lingchuan County, north China's Shanxi Province. Along the Wang Mang Ridge, there lies an awe-inspiring Xiyagou valley tunnel road. This tunnel road hangs precariously on the cliffs, showing the spirit of the local villagers who constructed it by hand.

Nestled atop the mountain, the small village of Xiyagou was once a secluded area, isolated by cliffs and peaks. The lack of accessible roads made daily life difficult for its inhabitants. They sustained themselves primarily through farming staples like corn and potatoes, yet the rugged terrain resulted in modest annual incomes that barely met their needs. Interaction with the outside world was limited to delivering essential packages through ropes.

Determined to pursue a way out, the villagers embarked on a 30-year endeavor. Three generations of families worked tirelessly to carve a 7.5-kilometer tunnel road from the living rock of the cliffs. Their efforts not only opened up access to the outside world but also sculpted a unique attraction along the southern Taihang Mountains, drawing visitors who enjoy both the natural beauty and the accomplishment of the villagers.
