Carved into the side of the Taihang Mountains, Xiyagou Cliffside Road in Jincheng, north China’s Shanxi Province is known for its breathtaking and daring construction along the sheer cliffs.

Using only simple tools such as steel rods and hammers, and with their bare hands, it took nearly 30 years for the residents of Xiyagou Village, located deep in the mountains, to finally chisel out a road connecting to the outside world. This 7.5-kilometer-long road was opened to traffic in June 1991.

Due to its stunning views and the remarkable story behind its creation, Xiyagou Cliffside Road has become a famous route for adventurers and tourists seeking an extraordinary experience.
