Chinese sprinter Xie Zhenye sets season-best in pre-Olympic 100m race

Xie Zhenye of China participated in a pre-Olympic men's 100-meter warmup race in Italy on July 13 and 14 and finished preliminary competition in season-best 10.05 seconds.

The race was made of the preliminary part on July 13 and the semifinals and the final on July 14. Having made a good start in the preliminary round, Xie then finished the semifinals in 10.08 seconds and the final in 10.09 seconds. The latter was the second-best among all runners, behind only 10.08 seconds by Marcell Jacobs of Italy, the gold medalist from the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.

Andre De Grasse of Canada came in third in the final with 10.11 seconds. He was the bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics.

Xie, who turns 31 in August, has secured qualification for the men's 200-meter and the men's 4x100-meter relay events at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. He won the men's 100-meter and the men's 4x100-meter relay gold medals for China the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, in 2023. At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, he, Su Bingtian, Tang Xingqiang and Wu Zhiqiang secured the men's 4x100-meter bronze after Team Great Britain were stripped of their silver medal due to a doping violation.
