China's independently developed offshore drilling platform, Xijiang 30-2B, was installed in the South China Sea, according to the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).

The massive structure, roughly 150 to 175 kilometers southeast of Shenzhen City in south China's Guangdong Province, weighs over 30,000 tonnes, exceeding the weight of steel used for two Canton Towers. It boasts an area of contour as spacious as 10 standard basketball courts.

The oil and gas platform sits in the sea at a depth of 98 meters, with a total height of about 198 meters, equivalent to a 70-story residential building.

The Xijiang 30-2B, a structure with facilities to drill wells and extract oil, was designed, built and installed independently by China. After the platform was put into operation, the entire Xijiang oilfield will achieve a peak annual crude oil production of over 3 million tonnes.
