Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that the most urgent and realistic goal regarding the Ukraine crisis is to cool tensions as soon as possible.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a phone call with Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Peter Szijjarto.

Szijjarto briefed Wang on his views on the current situation, particularly concerning the Ukraine crisis and Hungary's recent related efforts, saying that China is an important force in promoting peace.

Hungary is willing to work with China to prevent the escalation of the conflict and encourage the conditions for a political settlement, Szijjarto said.

Wang said that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently visited China, where Chinese President Xi Jinping had strategic discussions with him on key issues related to peace. This visit showcased the mutual trust and friendship between the two leaders and highlighted the all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Hungary for a new era.

Wang noted that Hungary has played a constructive role in mediating for peace.

He emphasized that all parties must quickly reach a consensus on the principles of no battlefield expansion, no escalation of fighting, and no incitement by any party. This is essential to creating the conditions for a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks.

China is ready to join hands with Hungary to bring together more forces in support of peace, create more rational voices, and steer the situation towards a political settlement, Wang said.
