Discus is one of the four throwing events in track and field at the Olympics, combining power, speed and balance. CGTN reporter Wang Siwen caught up with Feng at her training base in Yantai, Shandong Province.

Accumulating energy and then letting it all fly out with the discus. Finding that big throw has defined Feng Bin's everyday life for 18 years. The whole motion happens in just a few seconds, generating force required for every part of her training. Turning 30 this year, Feng said she gets better with age.

FENG BIN Athlete Women's Discus Throw "Now I often tell my coach that if I had my current understanding, view and feel of the discus when I was 16 or 17, then throwing over 70 meters would have been so easy for me. Discus throw is a kind of sport you hone slowly. The longer you practice, the deeper understanding of techniques you will have."

Feng is talented, her first Olympics Games Rio 2016, finished eighth in the final. In 2021, Feng reached her personal rock bottom after failing to reach the finals in Tokyo Olympics. Then it was a period of darkness, until she discovered that she did not need the sport, but wanted it.

FENG BIN Athlete Women's Discus Throw "It's one of the most important points in my life. Before the Tokyo Olympics, my general thoughts, understandings of technology, my view on training were very different from what they are now. Now, it's not a job, but a hobby and an interest."

LI WEIBIN Coach "All human beings need to go through struggles. Then one matures suddenly."

"It's just one game, not the whole life" – after developing this mindset, Feng is now on fire. 69.12 meters – Feng stuns women's discus-throw event at the World Championships in Eugene in 2022, her personal best. Her performance and technique have remained at a very high-level after that.

LI WEIBIN Coach "The focus now is to strengthen her throwing capabilities, avoiding injuries, being stable, and improving core strength; also, ensuring that there are no injuries during the regular training."

Now she hopes to stand on the podium and go for the world title

FENG BIN Athlete Women's Discus Throw "I still want to make a breakthrough – because we have never won an Olympic gold medal in discus throw. I want to smash the 70-meter barrier."

Confident, laughing all the time, outside the training arena, Feng is a normal girl, hanging out with besties, taking selfies and photos. Back on the field, there's one person always by her side, giving her support and the confidence to win.

FENG BIN Athlete Women's Discus Throw "He is like a father. With just a glance we know each other's thoughts. Just a glance, and I know that I will be scolded today. Now, when I pick up the discus, I look at him. When I walk into the discus circle, I give him another glance. When I wind up, I look at him again. He doesn't need to say anything. He just needs to sit there. He is the biggest support. As long as he sits there, I feel at ease and can do moves boldly."

Talking about the feeling of a perfect throw.

FENG BIN Athlete Women's Discus Throw "It's one out of ten thousand. It feels like you're releasing all your energy, you're putting all your energy into the discus."
