At least two people have died and 28 others are in hospital in a listeria outbreak reported in multiple U.S. states, health officials said on Friday.

In an investigation notice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said 28 cases of Listeria monocytogenes infections have been reported in 12 states. All of those who contracted the bacteria have been hospitalized and two deaths were reported, one in Illinois and another in New Jersey.
According to interviews conducted by the CDC with the patients, nearly 90 percent reported eating sliced meat at deli counters. People reported consuming deli-sliced turkey, liverwurst and ham most commonly, officials said.
An investigation is underway to determine which deli meat may be contaminated, while no information so far can show that people are getting sick from the prepackaged deli meats, said the CDC.
Listeria is a genus of bacteria that can cause a serious infection called listeriosis. It typically leads to fever and flu-like symptoms such as muscle aches and fatigue. It may also cause headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures.
The infection is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems. Listeria bacteria are motile and can survive and grow at low temperatures, which makes them a significant concern in food safety.
