England's Judd Trump defeated compatriot Shaun Murphy 11-5 in the final of the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, winning his first tile at the tournament.

Trump made good use of Murphy's slow start to build an early 7-3 lead and had a break of 110 – his 10th century at this year's Shanghai Masters. Though Murphy responded two centuries later, his rally came too late to stop the opponent from sealing the deal.

"This is one of the top five events of the season, so to win this is an amazing start to the season," Trump said after the victory. "I would like to replicate what I did last season and win close to maybe five or more events this season. I couldn't have dreamed of a better start."

Trump went through a series of tough battles to win his first title of the 2024-25 season as he beat seven-time world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan in the semifinals.

"The age of the crowd in China is so much younger than the rest of the world," he said. "I always enjoy playing in front of a fanbase where I can inspire the next generation. I think that is why my record in China is so good."

"It wasn't to be in the final of the Shanghai Masters unfortunately. Very disappointed to lose, of course," Murphy said in a video on Instagram. "No one likes to lose. I'm bitterly disappointed. You just can't make as many mistakes as I did against somebody of Judd's class and get away with it. I made more unforced errors in the first session in that match than I've made all week. Played some really good snooker here in Shanghai. I'm disappointed to have my worst session just at the most important time."
