The death toll from two landslides in southern Ethiopia has jumped to 229, a government official said on Tuesday. A landslide after heavy rain buried people in Gofa Zone on the night of July 21. The next morning, a second landslide engulfed people who gathered to help. Misikir Mitiku, Gofa district administrator, said the death toll surged after the people who came to rescue also got trapped.
