Tehran said it summoned the German ambassador Hans-Udo Muzel on Wednesday after the closure of an Islamic center in Hamburg over alleged support for Lebanon's Hezbollah and links to Iran.

Germany's interior ministry said on Wednesday it has banned the Islamic Center Hamburg (IZH) association and its subsidiary organisations, saying it pursues radical Islamist goals.

Fifty-three of the organisation's premises had been searched by German authorities in eight states in the country early on Wednesday, acting on a court order.

In addition to the Hamburg-based IZH, its subgroups in Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin were also banned.
