Nestled in the Alxa League of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Badain Jaran Desert stands out as a unique natural wonder. Unlike any other desert, it boasts over 140 lakes, locally known as "haizi," which add a touch of vitality to the vast sandy expanse. These lakes, each with its own distinct charm and scenery, add to the desert's appeal.

The name "Badain Jaran" itself is deeply connected to these lakes. Legend has it that a man named Badain discovered these lakes within the desert. The Inner Mongolian term "Jaran" refers to the number of lakes, thus giving the desert its name. Most of these lakes are inland saline lakes with high mineral content, while a few are freshwater or saltwater lakes.
