Table tennis superstar Ma Long and artistic swimming team captain Feng Yu have been selected as the flagbearers for China at the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, the country's delegation announced on Wednesday.

Widely considered one of the greatest table tennis players in history, Ma has won two men's singles gold medals and three team titles at the Olympics, three golds at the World Championships, and three World Cup titles among other honors.

The 35-year-old Ma is set to make his fourth Olympic appearance in the French capital, and will only compete in the men's team event at this edition.

Feng, 24, is a multi-time world champion in artistic swimming, which was previously known as synchronized swimming. She helped lead the Chinese team to silver at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games three years ago, and Paris 2024 will mark her second trip to the Olympics.

"I was both surprised and happy when I learned that I was chosen as China's flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Games," Feng said in a video posted on social media.

"I will participate in the Olympic Games for the second time in Paris. I look forward to displaying the spirit of Chinese athletes and hope that the team can achieve more success this time," she added.

The Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics is set to take place on the River Seine on Friday night.
