2024 International Congress of Basic Science concludes in Beijing

The 2024 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) concluded successfully on Friday at the Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications, located in Huairou Science City. The 13-day science event was attended by over 1,000 renowned scholars from home and abroad, including Fields medalists, Turing Award winners, Nobel Prize laureates, and dozens of members of national academies from China, the U.S., Japan and several European countries.

The six recipients of the 2024 Basic Science Lifetime Award delivered keynote reports on their respective fields, sparking heated discussions among scholars.

ICBS Chairman and Fields medalist Shing-Tung Yau said, "This is an important event for promoting the development of basic science and strengthening international scientific cooperation. For scientists, it is an academic feast of thoughts, with ideas of edgy scientific developments that could help them achieve new breakthroughs. We hope to provide young people with an opportunity to broaden their minds and learn cutting-edge scientific knowledge, growing their passion for scientific exploration."

Andrew Wiles, winner of the Basic Science Lifetime Award for mathematics, said, "Seeing the rapid progress China is making in basic sciences, there will certainly be more achievements and contributions in the future."

Leslie Valiant, winner of the Basic Science Lifetime Award for computer science, said, "The conference has allowed me to better understand the latest research developments in various fields, ultimately benefiting us all."

Over 500 plenary reports, scientific events and satellite meetings were held over the course of the 13 days, including "Evening of Mathematics," "Evening of Physics," "Evening of Computer Science," "Tsinghua TopTalks," and "Science Face-to-Face."

As one of the main venues of the 2024 International Congress of Basic Science, Huairou Science City has laid out 37 scientific and technological facilities and institutions, of which 10 are already operational. The number of scientific researchers in Huairou Science City has reached 23,000.

The Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications is the main organizer of the conference. Through the ICBS, it hopes to create an international academic exchange platform, introduce more top scientists to young talents, cultivate outstanding students, explore frontier interdisciplinary subjects, and provide support for future technological development.
