Construction of the No. 5 power unit at the Ningde Nuclear Power Plant in east China's Fujian Province commenced on Sunday, according to China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN).
It is the first nuclear power plant under construction in Fujian Province, being installed with six CPR-1000 pressurized water reactors (PWRs) rated at 1,080 MW each.
The first phase of power units one to four began construction on February 18, 2008, and became fully operational on July 21, 2016, in the city of Ningde.
The second phase of units No. 5 and No. 6 was approved by the country on July 31, 2023, and features Chinese-designed HPR1000 (Hualong One) PWRs. Upon full completion, each unit can be expected to generate nearly 10 billion kWh of electricity annually, which will meet the annual needs for production and living of a population of 1 million.

As of June 30, 2024, the first four units of the Ningde Nuclear Power Plant had generated 290.015 billion kWh of electricity, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2.38 billion tonnes. The construction of Units No. 5 and No. 6 will further increase the proportion of clean energy in Fujian Province.
