If Pacific Island countries boast pristine beaches and year-long sunshine, they are also home to some of the world's most fragile ecosystems. Faced with the threats posed by climate change and unsustainable development, they have adjusted their priorities toward a more balanced approach to development and environment. And China is providing a template and assistance to tackle these challenges. In this edition of Leaders Talk, CMG's Zou Yun caught up in Beijing with Charlot Salwai, prime minister of Vanuatu, during the last leg of his six-day official visit to China. Salwai is eager to learn more about China's solutions to help Vanuatu deal with some pressing issues like waste disposal. Though Vanuatu graduated from the official list of Least Developed Countries in 2020, Salwai remarks that people's livelihood, healthcare and education remain his government's priorities. He is therefore appreciative of China's support and thankful that China considers Vanuatu as "a friend and a brother."
