Rafael Nadal fell to Novak Djokovic in the second round in what was their 60th career meeting but only the second on the Olympic stage. The match also marked possibly the last chapter in one of the sport's most storied rivalries between the 38-year-old Spaniard who owns 22 Grand Slam titles, and the 37-year-old Serb with 24.

Djokovic dominated early, winning 10 of the first 11 games and eventually took a 6-1, 6-4 victory. The win avenged his loss to Nadal in the semifinals of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Meanwhile, Spain's Carlos Alcaraz did what his legendary compatriot couldn't do and advanced to the last 16 by defeating Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-1, 7-6.

On the women's side, top seeded Pole Iga Swiatek eased past the host nation's Diane Parry 6-1, 6-1, setting up a third-round clash with China's Wang Xiyu, who got past Russian Diana Shnaider 6-3, 6-1.

Another Chinese, Zheng Qinwen also had a successful day, defeating Dutchwoman Rus Arantx-a 6-2, 6-4, and will next face American Emma Navarro.
