Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for modernizing the country's border, coastal and air defense to make it strong and solid, as he chaired a leadership group study session prior to the country's Army Day, which falls on August 1.

Xi, also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remarks at the study session of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Tuesday.
