China's athletes won three gold medals, one silver and one bronze on Wednesday at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics to return their delegation to the top of the medal table.

Pan Zhanle set a new men's 100-meter freestyle world record of 46.4 seconds in the final to win the country's first swimming gold medal in the French capital. He beat the silver medalist, Kyle Chalmers of Australia (47.48), by 1.08 seconds and broke his own world record by 0.4 seconds. David Popovici of Romania earned the bronze medal in 47.79 seconds.

Deng Yawen claimed the first Olympic BMX freestyle cycling women's park gold medal after scoring 92.6 points in her second run in the final at Place de la Concorde. She was the only finalist to surpass 90 points (92.5) in the first run and that performance was good enough for her to win the final.

Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi maintained China's dominance in the women's synchronized 10-meter platform diving event by winning the final with 359.1 points. Their victory marked China's 50th diving gold at the Summer Olympics and extended the team's winning streak in the women's synchronized 10-meter platform competition to seven since the discipline was introduced to the Games in 2000.

Zhang Boheng claimed silver and Xiao Ruoteng grabbed bronze in the men's artistic gymnastics all-around final. Zhang scored 86.599 points and Xiao earned 86.364 points. The gold medal went to 20-year-old newcomer Shinnosuke Oka of Japan, who tallied 86.832 points in his first major senior competition.

Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen advanced to the women's singles semifinals after defeating former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber of Germany 6(4)-7, 6-4, 7(8)-6 on Wednesday. The loss officially sends Kerber into retirement, while Zheng's next opponent will be the current World No. 1, Iga Swiatek of Poland.

China also reached the mixed doubles tennis semifinals after Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu knocked out Matthew Ebden and Ellen Perez of Australia 6(8)-7(10), 7(10)-6(8), 10-5.

Chinese badminton players continued to progress as well. Shi Yuqi beat Toti Giovanni of Italy 21-19, 21-10 to reach the men's singles quarterfinals on Wednesday. Chen Yufei advanced to the women's singles last eight by knocking out Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark 21-8, 19-21, 21-11. Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong defeated Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping 21-16, 21-15 in a "Chinese Derby" in the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
