Damir Mikec and Zorana Arunovic won the first and so far only gold for Serbia at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris after defeating Türkiye's Yusuf Dikec and Sevval Ilayda Tarhan 16-14 in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team shooting final on Tuesday.
The duo trailed 8-2 in the final before erasing the deficit and claiming an epic comeback victory. Having placed fourth in the event at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021, the Serbian pair saw their gold medal dream come true in Paris.
"Yesterday we won a medal. It's like, you know, you won it, but now when you see this (celebrating spectators), this is great," Arunovic said in an interview with CGTN Sports Scene's Jiang Mengxi.
"It's my fifth Olympics. It's her fourth Olympics. This was our goal and it's here," Mikec said.
The two veterans spent more than 20 years of their lives training and competing as shooters. Upon winning the final, Mikec lied on the ground in celebration and according to Arunovic, "the emotions were on the ground."
The Serbian pair revealed that they have been following the performances of their Chinese counterparts and praised them as "shooting machinery" for winning three golds and two silvers.
Arunovic said that they have been friends with several Chinese shooters and have learned some Chinese words including "ni hao piao liang" (you're pretty), "zao shang hao" (good morning) and "she ji" (shooting).
