China has lodged solemn representations with Canada over the sailing of a Canadian warship in the Taiwan Straits through military and diplomatic channels, the Chinese Ministry of National Defense said on Friday.

Responding to a media query on the matter, Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the ministry, said the action by the Canadian side has caused disturbance and stirred up trouble in the Taiwan Straits.

It sent the wrong signals to the "Taiwan independence" separatists and seriously jeopardized peace and stability in the Straits, he added.

Zhang pointed out the Canadian side has added insult to injury by hyping up its wrongdoings and making grandiose excuses to mislead the public.

The Taiwan question is China's internal affair that brooks no foreign interference, the spokesperson reiterated.

China urges the Canadian side to abide by the one-China principle and be cautious in its words and deeds concerning the Taiwan question, so as not to undermine the development of the relationship of the two countries and the two militaries, he added.
