The Qinghai-Xizang Railway, stretching from Xining in Qinghai Province to Lhasa in the Xizang Autonomous Region, is the first railway to reach the heart of Xizang. It holds the title of the world's highest and longest plateau railway.
Traversing China's national nature reserves, the railway navigates through ecologically sensitive and fragile environments, often referred to as the "Third Pole" of the world. To safeguard the habitats of wildlife, such as the Tibetan antelope, Tibetan fox, and Tibetan wild donkey, the railway features 33 dedicated wildlife passages.
The Qinghai-Xizang Railway was completed and opened on July 1, 2006, marking the end of Xizang's history without rail access. As of June 30 this year, the railway has transported 36.885 million passengers and 87.751 million tons of goods in and out of Xizang, according to a press conference held by the regional government.
