Immersed in tradition at Liancheng's cultural extravaganza

A magical night of intangible cultural heritage was presented in the historical and cultural district of Liancheng County, Longyan, Fujian Province on the summer weekend of August 2 to 5.

The event featured a vibrant mix of traditional performances and festivities, attracting visitors from far and wide as well as local residents to enjoy this celebration of traditional Chinese culture and its unique charm.

The mesmerizing display began with molten iron, heated to over a thousand degrees, being flung into the air to create a dazzling shower of sparks that lit up the night sky. In the midst of this spectacle, the highlight of the night – the "dragon" – made its grand entrance. The "Gutian Dragon" was lifted high into the air, where it swayed majestically.

The Gutian dragon dance is usually performed in a parade to pray for favorable weather, peace, and prosperity. This marked the start of the parade of intangible cultural heritage.

Leading the procession was a team of over 40 energetic young performers dancing the traditional Yingge Dance, an ancient form of warrior folk dance that combines elements of opera, dance, and martial arts. Following them, was the impressive Gutian Dragon weaving through the lights.

The local night market also offered a variety of authentic Hakka delicacies and local specialties, such as sweet potato snacks, Hakka rice wine, lantern cakes and rice jelly.

Visitors were also able to explore traditional crafts such as woodblock printing, tin ware making, and Xuan paper production. These experiences provided a unique opportunity for people not only to see and appreciate Liancheng's intangible cultural heritage, but also to take a piece of it home with them.
