Russian forces have thwarted a Ukrainian attempt to penetrate the border in Russia's Kursk, Alexei Smirnov, the region's interim governor, said on Tuesday.

Ukrainian shelling injured five people in Kursk, including three children, Smirnov said.

There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian authorities.
