Located in Kaiping City, Guangdong Province, the Kaiping Diaolou and Villages site showcases its long history and rich culture to the world through its unique architectural styles. Built between the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the early 20th century, "diaolou" are multi-story defensive village houses, usually made of reinforced concrete, which represent a unique cultural blend of 19th and 20th century Chinese and Western architectural styles. In 2007, Kaiping Diaolou and Villages, a site with some 1,800 beautifully preserved fortified structures, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
