The chief of Russia's general staff, Valery Gerasimov, told President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that a Ukrainian attack in Russia's Kursk region had been halted.

In televised comments, Gerasimov said Russian forces were continuing to fight in areas near the border.

Gerasimov also said that on Tuesday morning, a unit of Ukraine's armed forces "numbering up 1,000 people" went on the attack.
