Liqiu or the Start of Autumn, the 13th of the 24 solar terms on the Chinese lunar calendar, falls on August 7 this year. The intensity of the yang, the active principle in nature according to ancient Chinese philosophy, decreases in this term and the focus of growth shifts from exuberance to maturity. Naturally, rain, heat and humidity come down a notch and a sense of dryness begins to remind one of the impending season. It is customary to worship the god of land, celebrate harvest and eat meat in this period. In this video, appreciate the calligraphic beauty of 立秋, the Chinese characters for Liqiu.
