China tied the USA for the most gold medals at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, with 40 trips to the top of the podium also marking the country's best performance at any overseas edition of the Games, a showing that includes a number of breakthroughs.

Sixteen years after Li Na narrowly missed the Olympic podium in Beijing, Zheng Qinwen made history for China after defeating Croatia's Donna Vekic to become the first athlete from the country to win a singles gold medal in tennis. Zheng arrived at the Paris Games as a Top-10 player, but wasn't considered a title favorite.

Her compatriots Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu also gave China a first, after they claimed silver in the mixed doubles final.

Chinese boxers secured a total of three gold and two silver medals, placing them at the top of the overall standings in the ring, and second in the event's gold medal tally. Those results also help highlight China's best Olympic performance in the four major combat sports of judo, taekwondo, wrestling and boxing.

In rhythmic gymnastics, China became the first non-European country to finish on top of the group event at the Games by taking first place just ahead of Israel and Italy.

And China claimed its first gold in artistic swimming's duet competition on Saturday, after winning the team event on Wednesday, leaving the country on top of that sport's medal table with two titles.
