The Executive Order No. 40/2024 of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) published on Monday designated October 13 as the election day for the SAR's chief executive.

According to Annex I of the Basic Law of the Macao SAR and the Chief Executive Election Law, the chief executive must be a Chinese citizen who is a permanent resident of the Macao SAR, at least 40 years old, has ordinarily resided in Macao for a continuous period of 20 years, supports the Basic Law, and is loyal to the People's Republic of China and its Macao SAR.

According to the law, the chief executive is elected by a broadly representative Chief Executive Election Committee and is then appointed by the Central People's Government. The chief executive serves a five-year term and may be re-elected once.
