The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics came to an end after 19 days of competition, with athletes taking home medals from 329 events.
The Closing Ceremony was held at the Stade de France on Sunday night and included a flying visit from a famous actor in the handover to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games.
At the start of the show, French swimmer Léon Marchand collected the Olympic Flame from one of the biggest tourist attractions in Paris, the Jardin des Tuileries.
The Chinese co-flagbearers were men's 61kg weightlifting champion Li Fabin and women's field hockey silver medalist Ou Zixia.
In a break from tradition, the women's marathon closed this year's Games, as opposed to men's event which has usually brought down the curtain in the modern era.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach officially announced the closing, with this edition also being his last Olympics in his current role.
Paris handed over the flag for the Games to the United States for Los Angeles 2028. The next host city always gets eight minutes in the Closing Ceremony and L.A. made them count as the spectators were treated to Hollywood actor Tom Cruise descending from the roof on a wire to receive the flag.
Six athletes from five continents and one from the Refugee Olympic Team were then invited for the flame extinguishing, with Chinese table tennis player Sun Yingsha, who won two gold medals and one silver, representing Asian athletes. Her selection marked the first time for a a female Asian athlete to take part in this section of the Closing Ceremony.
