Atletico Madrid and Manchester City have reached an agreement over the transfer of Julian Alvarez, the Spanish club announced on Monday.  According to ESPN, Atletico will pay City 82 million pounds (about $104.7 million) to bring the 24-year-old Argentine striker to the Metropolitano Stadium.

Atletico paid no more than 14 million pounds (about $17.9 million) to acquire Alvarez from River Plate in January 2022, but he only began to play for the English powerhouse from the 2022-23 season.

Having made 49 appearances, mostly off the bench, for City during the 2022-23 campaign, Alvarez scored 17 goals and delivered five assists for the club, making key contributions to their winning of the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

As City's starting striker Erling Haaland had to deal with more injuries in the 2023-24 season, Alvarez received more playing time. He got 19 goals and 13 assists in 59 games, helping City retain the Premier League championship.

Before joining City, Alvarez already lifted up multiple trophies including the Copa Libertadores de America with River Plate. He also won the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and Copa America in 2024 with Argentina. In short words, he has already collected most of the major team honors as a football player.

Alvarez's transfer fee also set a club record for City. Atletico finished the 2023-24 La Liga campaign with 24 wins, four draws and 10 losses in the fourth place. They scored 37 goals in 38 games, the second-fewest among all 20 clubs, but scored only 70 goals, the fewest in top-four. They could use a possible upgrade in firepower with Alvarez's arrival.
