Mauricio Pochettino has accepted the head coach job of the United States men's football team (USMNT), but no deal is signed yet, ESPN reported on Thursday.
ESPN revealed that Pochettino had lengthy discussions with Matt Crocker, technical director of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) before agreeing to succeed Gregg Berhalter as the national team's boss.
Pochettino coached two powerhouses, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of Ligue 1 and Chelsea of Premier League before leaving the Stamford Bridge after the 2023-24 season. Chelsea came in sixth in the top English league with 18 wins, nine draws and 11 losses in the end.
The USMNT failed to advance to the knockout stage at the Copa America at home in between June and July. The country will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada and Mexico. Therefore, Crocker was given the task of recruiting a world-class coach who can not only lead the USMNT to qualify for the World Cup in two years, but also take a longer run at the tournament.
The USSF chased Jurgen Klopp who parted ways with Liverpool this summer, but failed. The organization will have a regular board meeting on August 23, but a special meeting is also possible, according to ESPN.
Moreover, Pochettino reportedly still has unsettled financial issues with Chelsea and, thus, he cannot sign a contract to coach the USMNT until a solution is found.
