Jiaolong, China's manned deep-sea submersible, on Sunday completed its 300th dive since its maiden mission in August 2009.
A crew of one scientist and two submariners conducted the submersible's dive in the Western Pacific Ocean. It was the first of 18 planned dives in an ongoing scientific expedition.
Jialong is being carried by China's Deep Sea No. 1 research vessel, which has scientists from China, Canada, Spain and Colombia aboard. The ship left Qingdao in east China's Shandong Province on August 10.
During its 45-day expedition to the Western Pacific Ocean, Jiaolong is scheduled to collect deep-sea organisms, seawater and sediment, aiming to deepen our understanding of the unique ecosystems and environments of seamounts.
The mission is organized by the China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association under the Ministry of Natural Resources and implemented by the National Deep Sea Center.
Jiaolong is China's first independently designed and integrated 7,000-meter-class manned submersible. Since 2009, it has explored waters in the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, enabling 900 trips down into the deep sea.
The submersible set a diving record of 7,062 meters in the Mariana Trench in June 2012.
