Go Green: Meet the zero-waste community on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau

Perched at a breathtaking 4,100 meters above sea level, Jianzuo Village in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Qinghai Province is home to a secluded zero-waste community.

Once inundated with plastic waste, like many other regions, the villagers of Jianzuo Village embarked on a transformative journey. Recognizing the devastating impact of plastic pollution on their delicate ecosystem, the community rallied together.

In 2017, with the support of the Snowland Great Rivers Environmental Protection Association and under the leadership of Jamyang Sherab, they established a zero-waste community center. Constructed from repurposed materials and imbued with the spirit of sustainability, the center has become the heart of their eco-conscious lifestyle.

By adopting practices such as using cloth bags and stainless steel containers and resolutely rejecting disposable plastics, the villagers have not only cleaned up their immediate environment but have also inspired neighboring communities. Today, 54 families, two temples in Jianzuo, and an additional 220 families in Nangqen County, Yushu Prefecture, have embraced this zero-waste ethos.

Their pioneering efforts serve as a testament to the power of community action in addressing environmental challenges, offering a blueprint for sustainable living in even the most remote regions.
