Fifty people have been confirmed dead, and 15 others remain missing after torrential rain lashed the city of Zixing in central China's Hunan Province since late July, local authorities said on Monday.

Record-breaking rainfall in the aftermath of Typhoon Gaemi has toppled the homes of over 1,700 households and caused over 65,000 landslides and collapses in Zixing City.

Officials said 23,419 people were urgently transferred to safety as heavy rains wreaked havoc across the inland city.

So far, road access, power, communication and water have been generally restored in all the affected areas in Zixing, and disaster relief work is underway, authorities added.
