East China's Shandong Province is also known as the "Land of Qi and Lu." Qi and Lu were neighboring powers that rose and fell mainly on the Shandong Peninsula around 3,000 years ago, when China was ruled by the feudalistic Zhou Dynasty.

Lu is known as the birthplace of Confucius. But Qi was often the more dominant of the two. Over almost 50 years in the early 7th century BCE, Qi grew so strong that it began to define the politics of the entire dynasty of Zhou.
